Nikios School

One of the main landmarks of Nymfaio is the famous Nikios school. An architectural and historically significant building that housed for a few decades the village’s kindergarten, elementary and high school. Nikios school was built in 1928 based on plans that Ioannis Nikou brought from Sweden. During the interwar, Nymfaio was a large village with more than 3,000 residents and around 400 children attending the school. Although students’ numbers reduced dramatically during World War II and the Civil War that followed, the building continued to serve as a school until the 1980s when it was closed due to lack of children in the village. The building was renovated years later with the cooperation of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and initially functioned as a conference center. Today, the Nikios hosts the Brown Bear Information Centre of the Environmental Organization "Arcturos". The center provides useful information on brown bears, the dangers they face and ways to deal with them.
